Position Summary Information


Primary Purpose
The Assistant Director of Student and Academic Services is a key member of the Student Services Office and the Office of Academic Affairs. The position reports to both the Assistant of Dean of Students and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Experiential Learning.
The Assistant Director is an organized leader providing a positive McGeorge student experience by supporting various student services programming and publications, and by taking a leadership role in academic advising, student leadership development, and the law school's academic scheduling and reporting requirements.
This role collaborates with McGeorge students, faculty, administrative offices, and university offices. The Assistant Director of Student and Academic Services performs a vital role in collecting data and with the completion of the Law School's annual American Bar Association ("ABA") accreditation reports and submissions to U.S. News for its annual law school rankings. The Assistant Director works closely with faculty to identify curricular needs and assists the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs with the academic schedule.
The ability to use independent judgment, motivate and supervise the work of others, and provide timely and accurate communication to students, staff, faculty, and accreditors are essential components of this position. This position requires regular attendance at on- and off-campus events during and outside normal business hours.
Essential Functions

  • Works with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to prepare for site evaluation related to accreditation and works with Dean's Office to coordinate submissions to U.S. News for its annual law school rankings.
  • Facilitates the creation of the academic schedule and final exam schedule in conjunction with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and builds and manages relationships with full-time faculty, current and potential adjunct faculty, and visiting faculty. This includes creating surveys to collect student feedback on the schedule, connecting with faculty and adjunct faculty regarding their scheduling preferences, and working with the Associate Dean to create the schedule. Responsible for coordinating the communication of the schedules and updated schedules to students and other necessary constituents.
  • Manages the RSO Rental Program and an RSO Storage Program.
  • Serves as the lead manager of McGeorge's student government and student organizations. Attends all weekly SBA meetings, including those held after hours. Weekly meetings with our SBA President and Treasurer. Works with existing RSOs to update bylaws as needed, and with new RSOs to ensure effective creation of the student org within University guidelines and McGeorge procedures.
  • Works closely with faculty committees and others to ensure effective and consistent policies across all platforms, including our Grading and Advancement Rules, the Catalog, and the Code of Student Responsibility.
  • Recommends, drafts, and implements policies and procedures for the operation of Student Services and Academic Affairs, including designing new programs initiated to respond to changing student needs.
  • Provides academic advising and general counseling for diverse law students on a wide variety of issues, including course planning, graduation checks, professional development, personal issues, leadership, communication, conflict resolution, wellness, self-care, accommodations, and conduct issues.
  • Collaboratively and independently resolves sensitive student crises and grievances with the Assistant Dean of Students.
  • Participates on Law School and University committees and advocates for students in a wide variety of ways, including providing student-focused perspectives and solutions. Serves as an active ex-officio member of many McGeorge Faculty Committees including the G&A Committee and the Assessment Committee.
  • Enforces academic regulations and student code of conduct in conjunction with the Assistant Dean of Students and other university constituents.
  • Drafts Law School and inter-departmental communications on behalf of Student Services and Academic Affairs and works collaboratively across campus to coordinate student communication.
  • Responsibility for coordination and implementation of the law school's robust Orientation programming, which includes Orientation, Welcome Week, Reorientation, and other programs for 2L and 3L JD students.
  • Responsibility for Community Outreach and maintaining relationship, building connections, and providing opportunities for our law school and local community. Includes working with other Sacramento Campus constituents, the local Oak Park community, and student leaders to support programs and events.
  • Works with campus and university facilities to ensure that students are supported.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Juris Doctorate (JD) Degree.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of related legal work experience.
  • Two (2) years of related law school and/or higher-ed advising or student support experience.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Valid driver's license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University's fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
Hiring Range $68,640.00 - $86,273.00 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
