Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center is a joint computational research center with Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. Established in 1986, PSC is supported by several federal agencies, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and private industry.

PSC provides university, government, and industrial researchers with access to several of the most powerful systems for high-performance computing, communications, and data storage available to scientists and engineers nationwide for unclassified research. PSC advances the state of the art in high- performance computing, communications and data analytics and offers a flexible environment for solving the largest and most challenging problems in computational science.

We are seeking a motivated intern to join our team in deploying visualization applications for Open OnDemand on the Bridges-2 supercomputing platform. This internship offers hands-on experience in software maintenance, deployment, and container technologies, contributing to high-performance computing (HPC) environments used by researchers and scientists.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Assist in deploying visualization applications to Open OnDemand on Bridges- 2.
  • Collaborate with the team to configure and test applications in an HPC environment.
  • Learn and apply software maintenance practices to ensure application reliability and performance.
  • Use container technologies (Docker, Singularity, and/or Podman) to package and deploy applications.
  • Document deployment processes and contribute to user guides for Open OnDemand.
  • Participate in daily stand-up meetings and scheduled team meetings to discuss progress and challenges.

Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in a degree program (computer science, engineering, or related field preferred).
  • Experience with at least one high-level programming language (e.g., Python, Java, C++, or similar).
  • Basic understanding of Linux/Unix environments is a plus.
  • Interest in learning about HPC, software deployment, and container technologies.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and eagerness to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Reliable communication skills for participating in daily stand-ups and scheduled remote meetings.

Learning Opportunities:

  • Gain practical experience in software maintenance and deployment in an HPC setting.
  • Develop proficiency with container technologies, including Docker, Singularity, and/or Podman.
  • Learn about Open OnDemand and its role in providing web-based access to HPC resources.
  • Understand the Bridges-2 supercomputing platform and its applications in research.

Additional Information:

  • A remote work optionmaybe available for candidates with residency inNew York.All approved remote work arrangementsare subject to an approved remote work agreement(RWA) as part of any offer of employment.
  • Typical Work Schedule: Up to 35 hours per week during the summer, and up to 20 hours per week during the academic year.
  • Wage Transparency Requirements: In accordance with the pay transparency legislation set forth by NY the corresponding salary range for this position, if placed NY ranges between $15.00-$16.00/hour.
