Job Summary

The Pulmonary Function Technician performs pulmonary function and exercise tests on patients. These tests are used to diagnose and manage disease in patients. The pulmonary function technician also participates in research projects that require pulmonary function or exercise testing as an evaluation criterion.

The major portion of the duties of the pulmonary function technician includes instructing and properly coaching patients to perform very demanding and "effort-dependent" breathing tests, independently and under minimal supervision, sometimes on very ill patients. The pulmonary function technician must learn all of the various measurements of lung function in order to generate reproducible and accurate results. An important factor required to perform the testing is the ability to fully understand the technical aspects of the equipment, as well as comprehend various computerized hardware and software applications. Following a variety of detail-specific protocols is critical to the success of this position.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $37.74 - $47.11 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Adult Pulmonary Function Laboratory is administratively part of the Cardiovascular Research Institute. The Adult Pulmonary Function Laboratory conducts tests as part of the clinical evaluation and/or treatment of patients referred from UCSF medical center or outside facilities who have a range of pulmonary diseases. These procedures are also conducted as part of certain clinical research protocols carried out by the Pulmonary Attending Physicians. The Adult Pulmonary Function Laboratory also provides training for medical students, residents, and the Pulmonary Fellows during their rotations on the Pulmonary Service at Moffitt-Long Hospitals.

Required Qualifications


  • Graduation from college with a major in an applicable natural science plus one year of experience in the kind of work to be performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills both verbal and written.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Ability to work closely with other employees.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems independently and in a team setting.
  • Able to communicate effectively with patients and be sensitive to their needs.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Pulmonary Function certificate.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of people, including (extremely ill) patients.
  • Comfortable working with human blood.
  • Phlebotomy experience.
  • Coursework in physiology.
  • Ability to use statistics.
  • Prior experience working with (extremely ill) patients in a hospital or clinic setting.
