We want someone passionate about working on an agile team and using their knowledge, experience, and expertise to deploy software systems that tackle the most complicated remote sensing challenges.

We are currently looking to hire an experienced Software System Engineer that is ready for a career where you know your work makes a difference. We want someone passionate about working on an agile team and using their knowledge, experience, and expertise to build software systems that tackle the most complicated remote sensing problems. Primarily responsibilities will include operating, sustaining, and innovating a complex Linux build, integration, and test environments that enables the development of sophisticated, real-time decision support systems that support remote sensing, data acquisition, and analysis applications for National Security missions.

On any given day, you may be called on to:



  • Team to enable development and testing of complex software across infrastructures that are utilized by multiple code development teams, to support the detection and resolution of defects.

  • Work collectively with architects, infrastructure partners, developers, testers, and end users to deliver a robust evaluation of fixes as well as new functionality.

  • Plan, develop, and complete the implementation of solutions in the areas of hybrid computing, security architecture, software architecture, and network engineering.

  • Use strong problem-solving/critical thinking skills as well as interpersonal and collaboration skills to support colleagues across multiple teams with diverse technology stacks.

  • Contribute to the future of a deeply exciting mission through engagement with diverse computer science and IT specialists in areas such as analytics, cloud computing, architectures, and data management and visualization.

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.



Salary Range:

$99,400 - $193,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:



  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant STEM field plus five (5) or more years of experience; or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

  • Experience with the following:

  • Developing and modifying Python scripts in a Linux environment.

  • Maintaining existing Perl and Bash scripts with an end goal of replacing them with a consistent Python code base.

  • Linux systems administration.

  • Problem identification, root cause analysis, and solving.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q and SCI clearance which may require a polygraph test.



Qualifications We Desire:



  • Expectations of supporting daily verification of a complex software environment on locally supported testbeds

  • Experience in the following:

  • Git source code management.

  • Apache Zookeeper, Kubernetes, or other centralized services for managing systems applications.

  • Researching, evaluating, and recommending solutions to improve current systems.

  • DevOps and CI/CD practices

  • Active DOE/DOD clearance with SCI, with a recent polygraph test.



About Our Team:

The Systems Design and Architecture Department designs, evaluates, and develops sophisticated architectures for processing and exploitation of remote sensing information. We enable teams that invent, analyze, and develop algorithms and software that support real-time extraction and classification of static and dynamic events from a variety of very complicated data streams from pathfinder remote sensing assets. We are part of crafting and deploying innovative large networked computing systems that process terabytes of near real-time data daily, extracting information, and providing it to national decision makers.

Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.
