iSchool LIS Practicum: Parkland College Music Archives Fall 2025
This is an unpaid practicum with compensation being provided in the form of academic credit for course IS 549 at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Overview:
The Parkland College Learning Commons
is partnering with the Music Program to improve the organization and discoverability
of the sheet music collection kept in Parkland's music archives. A practicum
student will work with the College Archivist and Choir Director to create and
execute a plan to inventory and develop a database of chorus sheet music. This
would be a great opportunity for a student interested in metadata, music
librarianship/archives, or archivist looking for experience.
Potential Activities Include:
- Arranging and describing a collection of sheet music.
- Creating a metadata schema based on existing standards.
- Cataloging at item level.
- Creating a database for discoverability.
Required:
- Enrollment in the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Library and Information Science Masters Degree Program.
- Enrollment in course IS 549 at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for the Fall 2025 semester.
- The practicum must be completed to receive course credit.
- A commitment of at least 7 hours per week for the semester.
- Ability to work independently.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Schedule:
- Hours can be scheduled any time
Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 5 pm while the College Archivist and/or Choir
Director is present.
