The Position
Directly responsible for the overall administration, coordination and evaluation of the human resource function. Actively participates in day-to-day operations, contributing directly to projects and ensuring successful outcomes through personal involvement and leadership. This position is a key member of the College's management team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and recommend improvement of the organization's policies, procedures and practices for personnel matters and develop HR strategies aligned with the College's strategic plan.
- Manage annual budgets and strategic plans for the human resource department.
- Oversee employee benefit and retirement programs.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to employees and management on HR-related issues and concerns.
- Handle employee grievances, investigations, and disciplinary actions in a fair and consistent manner.
- Oversee recruiting activities and implement effective onboarding programs to integrate new hires into the organization.
- Maintain knowledge of industry trends and employment legislation.
- Conduct organizational compliance trainings.
- Implement and optimize HR systems and processes to streamline workflows and improve efficiency.
- Lead compensation and benefits reviews and policy implementation, analyzing needs and trends. Consults with the Council of Independent Colleges of Virginia (CICV) and the Virginia Private Colleges Benefits Consortium (VPCBC) as needed.
- Evaluate job roles, perform market analysis and recommend salary modifications to ensure fair and competitive compensation practices.
- Direct the work of the human resource department, provide guidance on current legal issues, best practices, and College strategy. Evaluate performance of HR staff.
- Participate on multiple committees and special projects that affect faculty and staff.
- Responsible for the completion of surveys for the college's liability insurance and multiple salary and benefits surveys (CUPA, AAUP, IPEDS, etc.).
- Manage work authorization compliance by working with legal counsel to obtain work Visas such as Optional Practical Training (OPT) and H1-Bs.
- Serves as Deputy Title IX Coordinator for the College.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor's degree and 7-10 years related experience; Master's degree preferred
- SPHR or SHRM-SCP certification is preferred
- Proven experience in a senior HR leadership role, preferably in higher education.
- In-depth knowledge of HR best practices, employment laws, and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Strong leadership and people management skills with the ability to inspire and motivate others.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution abilities.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to translate business objectives into HR initiatives.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products as well as HRIS platforms and other relevant technologies such as applicant tracking and compensation analysis.
- Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence.
- Behave ethically and maintain strict confidentiality of personnel and College information.
