Responsibilities

Surgical Technologists are an integral part of the operating room team and work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate safe care of patients during operative procedures.

Our Surgical Tech Apprentice program is a full time paid training program that is 40 hours a week for up to 7 months consisting of both clinical and textbook learning. Classes and skills labs will be held at Norton Healthcare Pavilion in downtown Louisville. Some travel between hospital locations may be required.

Up to 7 months paid training will consist of:

Up to three months of classroom instruction, simulation lab training and clinical hours as a surgical technologist apprentice.
Up to four months of hands-on, clinical experience as a surgical technologist in orientation.

Upon successful completion of the program, you will be working in a Surgical Tech position at one of our 9 hospitals.

Surgical Technologists assists members of the health care team in:

Preparation and handling of instrumentation and surgical equipment and assisting the surgeon during the surgical procedure.
Administers care and use of equipment applications based on the age and needs of the patient population served.
Applying knowledge of specific procedures or specialties, effectively prioritize, and effectively plan and problem solve due to the changing nature of the work situation during surgical procedures.
Recognizing and supporting the need for immediate response during urgent or emergency situations.
Possessing basic knowledge of medical terminology, the metric system and aseptic technique, and apply this knowledge in all patient and family interactions.

Examples of Surgical Technologist duties you will learn include:

* Gather & open supplies necessary for surgical procedure	* Pass instruments and supplies to surgeon
* Perform surgical hard scrub	* Prepare medications
* Gown and glove other team members	* Handle & prepare specimens
* Prepare & maintain sterile field & operating room	* Coordinate & assist in room turnover
* Assist in preparing the patient for surgery * Maneuver endoscopic cameras	* Perform instrument count * Anticipate needs of patient and surgeon
