Departmental Overview

University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) strengthens Berkeley's excellence through engagement with alums, parents, undergraduate and graduate students, and friends of the University, raising public awareness about Berkeley, and increasing private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus's philanthropic advancement strategies and works to strengthen unit development in partnership with campus fundraisers. UDAR handles a range of central activities and services encompassing communications, stewardship, prospect development, and gift management.

Annual Programs:

The Office of Annual Programs is the university's largest fundraising department and is responsible for engaging thousands of alumni, parents, and students as donors and volunteers each year. The goals of this department are to: 1) increase the number of annual donors, 2) significantly raise the amount of discretionary funds for the Chancellor, the deans and program directors, and 3) identify campaign/major donors for the campus. Programs include the Parent and Family Philanthropy program, Pipeline Development, and Direct Response Marketing. The department is made up of 33 employees and raises $13-$15 million in private contributions from 40% of campus donors each year.

Direct Response Marketing:

Direct Response Marketing (DRM) manages mass marketing solicitations for the academic units, the library, and athletics, through direct mail, email, texting, student calling programs, and Digital Philanthropy. The Digital Philanthropy team is responsible for crowdfunding, Big Give (Berkeley's giving day), thematic giving hubs, texting, and student philanthropy and is a fast-growing and strategic area for the university, with consistent year-over-year donor growth. Direct Response Marketing is the primary driver behind reaching the most alumni and generating over 40% of campus donors annually. DRM partners with a variety of campus fundraising professionals to provide solicitation services for many colleges, departments, and programs, as well as student groups.

Position Overview

Job Summary: Involves designing, developing, delivering, administering, and managing fundraising programs or clients. Identifies new donors and develops materials, plans, and organizes related programs/events; cultivates, stewards, and may solicit donor prospects. Manages high-level clients or projects that require being a subject matter expert.

Generic Scope: Experienced professional who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with an in-depth understanding of the professional field; independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; possesses broad job knowledge; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions.

Custom Scope: Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced fundraising professional. Plans, schedules, and implements impactful comprehensive fundraising and alumni relations projects and programs, including specific fundraising solicitations, campaigns, and programs for UC Berkeley's annual funds, and research on best practices, etc. As part of University Development and Alumni Relations, support all schools, campus units, and student groups. May coordinate and oversee the work of support staff and/or other professionals. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. The position is expected to raise gift dollar amounts as established at each fundraiser specialization. As Assistant Director, develop new programming, which may involve specialized projects or clients that require a high degree of expertise and autonomy.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, schedules, and implements fundraising and alumni relations projects and programs, including specific fundraising programs such as annual fund, best practice research, et cetera. Programs may focus on young alumni, loyal donors, or lapsed donors. Work directly with campus partners to implement fundraising strategies. Track results to goal, and recommend any shifts needed to reach goals.
  • Coordinates and oversees the work of support staff and / or other professionals. May manage volunteers, and vendors.
  • Responsible for high-level clients or complex projects, provide analysis and information of complex results or activities, and makes recommendations to upper management for program changes or development of new programs as required Program development includes recommending new approaches to cultivation, engagement and solicitation. Recommend and pilot or test new approaches, fully leading implementation of tests, and report results to campus partners.
  • Participates in short and long-range strategic planning, making recommendations based on past program success or future projections. Collaborate with campus partners to gain buy-in on new plans and approaches. Develops strategies within existing annual giving solicitation policy.
  • Ensures that predetermined fundraising goals of $500,000 minimum funds are raised annually.
  • Identifies, cultivates, solicits, renew, upgrade, and/or stewards donors.
Required Qualifications

  • Minimum two years of experience demonstrating a thorough working knowledge of fundraising, donor relations, and marketing concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
  • Minimum one year demonstrating strong written and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to build and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies, and obtain buy-in for plans and new concepts.
  • Minimum of one year experience successfully executing project management skills.
  • Thorough working knowledge of a large, complex, higher-ed institution, including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.
  • Strong organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills, including skills in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification / avoidance / resolution.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong skills to meet or exceed fundraising or project goals and objectives.

Education Level

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $97,000 - $107,000, and is commensurate with experience, salary placement guidelines, and staff equity in UDAR and on the Berkeley campus.

  • This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
Other Information

  • This is not a visa opportunity.
  • This is a Bay Area/Northern CA-based position.
  • This position is eligible for up to 80% remote work, with exact arrangements determined in partnership with your supervisor. Team members typically come into the office on Tuesdays, attend periodic in-person retreats, and volunteer once a year for Alumni Relations events.
