Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a part-time First Year Student Advisor/Specialist for the Provost & Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Supports in-person group advising sessions 2-4 times per week between mid-June and end of August during concurrent sessions of New Student Orientation (NSO).
  • Supports our group virtual academic advising and registration initiatives for students unable to travel to campus for NSO.
  • Helps students create balanced and appropriate full-time schedules for their first semester at Rutgers-New Brunswick to help students meet degree requirements, complete foundational courses in programs of interest, and explore their academic interests.
  • Works under the guidance of the school-based Assistant Deans for First-Year Students and alongside school-based Assistant Deans and student counselors as they guide students through the process of registering for their Fall 2025 courses.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Rutgers degree requirements and university systems (Degree Navigator, Schedule of Classes, Canvas).
  • Comfort with web-based meeting platforms, as well as Google and Microsoft Suites.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must be comfortable using computers (advising and registration takes place virtually or in a campus computer lab).
  • Part-time advisors do not need prior familiarity with Rutgers degree requirements but must be interested in supporting new first-year students as they begin their college career, be willing to engage in reflective conversations with students about their academic interests and goals and be able to help students make connections between those interests and academic opportunities at the University.
