As part of the Land Grant University, the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University is composed of over 40 faculty that direct a diverse portfolio of programs in teaching, research, and extension. Entomology and Plant Pathology houses the Plant Disease and Insect Clinic, the Larry Grand Mycological Herbarium, Micropropagation and Repository Unit, Structural Pest Management Training Facility, an Insect Museum with 1.9 million vouchered insects, and the Center for Integrated Fungal Research.
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences houses 12 Academic departments with 294 faculty, 2,891 undergraduate students and 899 graduate students. The College is home to 18 research stations strategically located across the state that enhances our interactions with our farmers, stakeholders, and industry partners. Essential Job Duties |
The Research Associate will be mainly responsible for performing lab, computational, greenhouse, and field research in sweet potato and cucurbit diseases. The incumbent will independently generate and analyze data for projects, write publications, and present at scientific conferences and grower meetings. Will assist with securing funding for the lab through grant writing and contract research. Will also be responsible for a range of tasks related to lab management including training and supervision of other lab staff, lab safety compliance and inspections, purchasing, stocking and maintenance of equipment.
The Research Associate will be responsible for, but not limited to:
- Independently, generate and analyze data for projects
- Independently, write publications
- Present at scientific conferences and grower meetings
- Assist with grant writing and contract research
- Assist with lab management by training and supervision of other lab staff, lab safety compliance and inspections, purchasing, stocking and maintenance of equipment.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- A PhD in plant biology, plant pathology or related science field.
- Experience working with sweetpotato or cucurbit vegetables and/or microorganisms infecting them in field and laboratory settings including growing plants and microbes, taking care of plants and cultures, sterile technique, and storing microbial long-term cultures.
- Experience giving oral presentations and writing scientific papers.
- Previous experience in lab management including training and supervision of other lab staff, lab safety compliance and inspections, purchasing, stocking and maintenance of equipment.

Other Required Qualifications |
- Strong oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience conducting postharvest disease experiments
- Experience working with fungicides of sweetpotato and cucurbit vegetable crop
- Experience in data analysis using R and Geneious
|
Required License(s) or Certification(s) |
- Valid Driver's Lience and the ability to obtain a NC Driver's License within 60 days of hire.
- The incumbent will need to drive independently to field experiments and will need to drive a pickup truck and a pickup truck with a trailer.
