Job Summary

The UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (HDFCCC), or Cancer Center, combines basic science, clinical research, epidemiology/cancer control and patient care from throughout the University of California, San Francisco system.

The purpose of this position is to provide technical support for studies on both cancer drug resistance and vascular stability.

The main duties:

  • Performing mouse tissue embedding, sectioning, histology, Western blot, ELISA, IHC and IF, FACS analysis, PCR and agarose gel electrophoresis
  • Performing DNA and RNA isolation, molecular cloning, transduction and transfection, mammalian and microbial culture
  • Performing qPCR, and in situ hybridization
  • Managing large mouse colony, including setting up breeding, weaning, ear tagging, toe clipping, tail biopsies
  • Assist in surgeries, including survival surgery; intravenous and intraperitoneal injections; and delivery of drugs by gavage and tail biopsies
  • Follow standard laboratory procedures to prepare buffers
  • Maintain accurate records of all mice using mouse database
  • Should have strong genetic and molecular/cell biology skills, preferably with some experience using mice and cell lines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Must be organized, take directions, keep meticulous records, and meet all deadlines.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel are required.

Physical Demands:
  • Regularly required to stand, use manual dexterity, talk or hear; Frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms; occasionally sit; frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; vision abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • There may be Potential exposure to fumes, airborne particles, or rodent dander. May work with toxic, caustic chemicals, liquid nitrogen, mouse tissue or blood.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $26.00 - $31.04 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications

SRA I:

  • BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Should have strong genetic and molecular/cell biology skills, preferably with some experience using mice and cell lines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • Must be organized, take directions, keep meticulous records, and meet all deadlines.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel are required.
  • Good verbal and written communication skill & meticulous record keeping

SRA II: In additional to the above
  • BA/BS in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training. Experience working with mice or lab animals
  • Experience with histology, Western blotting, IHC and IF, FACS analysis,
  • Experience with mouse husbandry, performing surgeries, giving injections, genotyping
  • Experience with DNA and RNA isolation, cloning, transduction and transfection, mammalian and microbial culture
  • Performing qPCR, and in situ hybridization

Preferred Qualifications


  • Genome engineering using CRISPR-Cas9 is desirable, RNA-seq and single-cell RNA-seq experience is desirable
