Job Summary

This is an 18-month limited position.

Research in the Shain Laboratory focuses on the genomics of skin cancers. Our research makes use of molecular biology, cell biology, genomics, bioinformatics, and multidisciplinary collaborations to gain new insights into the molecular determinants of human malignancies. Our team is comprised of biologists and computational scientists working together to advance understanding of skin biology and improve patient outcomes. The technician in the laboratory will work closely with all members of the laboratory on a diverse array of projects to help, as needed, facilitate the overall goals of the laboratory. Specific tasks include melanocyte culture, single-cell sorting, screening multi-well plate, single-cell sequencing library preparation, and next generation sequencing data analysis.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $26.00 - $31.04 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Dermatology - School of Medicine, is responsible for a broad range of patient care, teaching, research and public service responsibilities. The Department provides medical students, residents, and post-doctoral fellows in the School of Medicine, with programs in research, patient care, teaching and public service. The mission of our group is to understand, measure and improve the health of patients with chronic skin disease, as well as train future leaders in the field of patient-oriented research. The Department is comprised of four distinct clinical sub-units located at the Ambulatory Care Center, San Francisco General Hospital, Mount Zion and the Veteran's Administration Medical Center. The Department consists of 31 full-time faculty, 40 researchers, 40 staff, 13 residents and 6 clinical fellows. These operations are administered through various dispersed, interdependent sub-units, which are coordinated through a centralized Administrative Core.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position.
  • Working knowledge in tissue culture and basic molecular biology (including microscopy, PCR and immunoblotting).
  • Effective use of laboratory instruments and their maintenance; knowledge of biomedical and biotechnological techniques and methodologies.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills. Initiative to work independently and efficiently is expected.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Prior experience studying skin cancer (which may be acquired while in school).
  • Working knowledge of R or a similar programming language.
