Job Opportunity: Assistant Controller Location: Newark, NJ Non-Profit Organization \| Full-Time \| $90,000 per year Position Overview: We are seeking a skilled Assistant Controller to oversee financial operations and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting within a non-profit environment. This role is ideal for someone with experience in financial management, grant budgeting, and internal controls. The Assistant Controllerwill collaborate closely with cross-functional departments, manage accounting processes, and support the organization's financial health and compliance. Key Responsibilities: Develop and maintain robust internal control systems to safeguard financial resources. Revise and maintain the organization's Finance Procedure Manual to reflect best practices and ensure operational efficiency. Ensure compliance with all applicable accounting standards and financial regulations. Collaborate with key departments to prepare and manage budgets for new funding proposals and grants. Support the management of grant budgets, ensuring alignment with funder guidelines and reporting requirements. Oversee tracking and reporting of grant expenditures, ensuring all expenses are accurately captured and reported. Monitor grant spend rates and report on any significant variances; adjust forecasts as necessary. Serve as the primary point of contact for insurance broker regarding policy renewals. Supervise and mentor two staff members: Assist with the month-end and year-end closing processes to ensure accurate financial records. Participate in the annual audit and work with external auditors to ensure a smooth review process. Investigate discrepancies in financial records, make necessary corrections, and propose improvements to internal processes. Review and ensure proper payroll allocations and position assignments. Support the CFO and Director of Finance/Controller with ad-hoc financial analysis and special projects as needed. Adhere to and promote all organizational policies and procedures. Perform other tasks and duties as assigned to support the finance team. Qualifications: Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Accounting (Master's degree is a plus). 5+years of progressively responsible experience in financial management, including financial analysis, reporting, and non-profit grant administration. Skills & Knowledge: Strong understanding of GAAP and relevant regulatory requirements. Experience with complex financial systems and processes. Advanced Excel skills (including pivot tables, VLOOKUP) and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Strong communication skills and attention to detail. Valid driver's license for travel as needed.
