The Instrument & Electrical Design Engineer is responsible for creating comprehensive design and construction work packages, developing electrical and instrumentation design documents, and ensuring safety and engineering standards are met for capital projects. The role requires a minimum of 5 years of experience, proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office, and excellent communication skills.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Maintain protection of the environment and the health and safety of our employees, customers, and the communities in which we operate and/or transport our products, as the highest priority.
  • Provide complete design and construction work packages that meet safety in design requirements and engineering standards. Work packages may include instructions for the contractor, design drawings, specifications, reference drawings, sketches, pictures, plot plans, BOMs, material takeoffs, etc.
  • Develop electrical design documents, including but not limited to one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematics, cable schedules, power and cable tray plans, power and cable tray elevations, panel schedules, grounding plans, installation details, block diagrams, and demo sketches.
  • Develop instrumentation design documents, including but not limited to instrument index, instrument location plans, junction box location plans, schematic, wiring diagrams, installation details, loop drawings, cabinet layouts, junction box schedules, marshalling cabinet schedules, network communications drawings, block diagrams, conduit and cable schedules, annunciator panel layouts, instrument specifications, analyzer specifications, and demo sketches. Interface with third party packages to the DCS/SIS systems.
  • Represent all Instrument and control logic functionality for Process Hazard Analysis on projects or MOCs.
  • Create AutoCAD drawings of electrical & instrumentation systems and handle customization of AutoCAD workstations, manage plotting, transfer of files, importing or converting other CAD file formats, pictures, scans, etc.
  • Assist the engineering staff with all aspects of plant electrical and instrumentation design projects.
  • Support/work with the plant Capital Projects Team for program element development and implementation and assist with special projects where needed.
  • Develop documentation to support minor facility modifications.
  • Understand project schedule constraints and information requirements to produce all electrical and instrumentation deliverables in a timely manner.
  • Work with Plant and Construction resources to resolve installation details and work in the field during project installation, performance of loop checks, and oversight of final commissioning. Verify electrical and instrumentation installation follows the design.
  • Perform the necessary QA/QC steps for new field or shop construction.
  • Perform electrical and instrumentation system walkdowns and create as-built drawings.
  • Help evaluate and validate contractor performance.
  • Participate in planned or unplanned plant outages.
  • Support the site with any drafting needs.
  • Ability to provide simple design supports for scope development following standards.
  • Coordinate drawing management activities using the Oxy drawing management portal/program Adept. Will work to add new or modify existing drawings in the database, and support outside engineering firm needs by exporting relevant drawings.
  • Experience using and maintaining an instrument database.
  • Complete additional responsibilities as assigned by Plant Management.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required. Associates degree in Applied Sciences in Drafting and Design Technologies (or equivalent) is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of I&E engineering design and drafting experience.
  • High proficiency in AutoCAD software, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Expertise of electrical, instrumentation, analyzer, and controls construction codes and practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to read, write, and speak in English.
  • Project commissioning and startup experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work as part of a team. Ability to work weekends, holidays and respond to callouts on a non-routine basis.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs, climb ladders and stairs.
  • Walking, bending, stooping is required.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment including the use of a respirator and harness.
  • Must be able to respond to visual and audible alarms.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years of relevant experience. Relevant experience includes project development and design as an Instrumentation or Control Systems Designer or Engineer/Specialist
  • Relevant experience in chemical manufacturing facility.
  • Proficient in SAP and Microsoft Access.
  • Experience using AutoCAD/Navisworks.
  • Experience with drawing management databases, such as Adept.
  • Ability to provide technical support for maintenance instrumentation, electrical, and control systems.
  • Experience assisting 3rd party engineering teams.
