Position description

Center for Advanced Light Microscopy (CALM) - Associate/Full Specialist

Biochemistry & Biophysics

UC San Francisco

A microscopy specialist position is available at the University of California San Francisco. The specialist will join a team running the Center for Advanced Light Microscopy (CALM) that supports scientists at the Mission Bay campus with their microscopy needs. The CALM manages 12 commercially-available microscopes located in Genentech Hall and the Cardiovascular Research Institute, and makes custom-build microscope systems accessible to UCSF scientists.

The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for the custom-build microscope systems in the CALM and in laboratories or Cores that request our assistance. The CALM is currently finishing the build of a Single Objective Light Sheet Microscope (SOLM), and the candidate will be responsible for maintenance and training of users on that system. Additional projects will include building / maintaining a prism-based TIRF system, a custom-build multi-photon system, several more SOLMs, and single molecule imaging systems. The CALM will provide support for software control and electronic integration but the candidate will become fully responsible for optomechanical operation of these microscopes. In addition to a great desire to learn the fundamentals of microscope building it is critical that the candidate communicates well with scientists using the microscopes. In addition there will be opportunities for helping to expand educational opportunities for microscopy techniques and image analysis to the UCSF community, allowing us to provide additional support to our user base. Within these parameters, the successful candidate will have considerable freedom which will include collaborations with users.

Required Qualifications:

  • Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of research experience.
  • Specialists appointed at the Full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of research experience.
  • Previous experience with microscopy is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in biology, physics, optics, or a related field is preferred.
  • Previous experience with microscope building, imaging analysis and training of users is desirable.
  • Candidates should have strong organizational skills, be flexible and able to prioritize tasks, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
