JOB ANNOUNCEMENT HATE CRIME VICTIM ADVOCATE Chicago Commission on Human Relations (Inter-Group Relations) Number of Positions: 1 (Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval) Starting Salary: $74,244 Applications for this position will be accepted until 11:59pm CDT on 4/1/2025 Under direction, provides counseling and social service assistance to individuals affected by hate crimes and participates in mediating community tensions and intergroup conflicts citywide; and performs related duties as required. ESSENTIAL DUTIES * Works with racial, ethnic, religious and social groups to identify concerns causing tensions and to develop plans for resolving them. * Presents to the public at community organizations to inform individuals of the various laws, statutes, and penalties related to hate crimes. * Networks with the Civil Rights Unit of the Police Department to schedule educational workshops for sworn staff of the Chicago Police Department.. * Reviews police reports, identifies, and contacts victims to offer advocacy services. * Counsels victims regarding their options for available social and governmental services. * Guides victims through their interactions with the police and State's Attorney's Office. * Establishes networking relationships with an array of outside advocacy groups in areas related to health care, social and legal victim support services. * Collaborates with agency representatives to serve victims' needs. * Verifies that relevant assistance was provided and that adequate advocacy support was provided to victims. * Mediates between disputing groups to resolve conflicts and tensions. * Creates and facilitates workshops and forums addressing issues of intergroup conflicts and tensions, discrimination and cultural diversity.
Additional duties may be required for this position LOCATION: 740 N. Sedgwick, Suite 400 Chicago IL, 60654 WORK SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in the Social Sciences or a directly related field, plus four (4) years of community or social service experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience Licensure, Certification or Other Qualifications A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required. SELECTION REQUIREMENTS This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a written exercise and/or a skills assessment test as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected. Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following: * Previous work experience in a role advocating for hate crime victims. * Previous work experience facilitating workshops and forums addressing issues of intergroup conflicts and tensions, discrimination and cultural diversity. * Previous work experience providing victims support through the criminal court system, providing guidance on working with the Police and State's Attorney's Office towards the successful prosecution of hate crime charges... * Previous work experience in social services. * Bilingual.
