The Associate General Counsel (Research) reports to the Deputy General Counsel for Research and provides legal support to the Institute's academic research enterprise. This role will provide advice and counsel to leadership in connection with research activities, including applicable international, federal, and state laws; University System of Georgia and Georgia Institute of Technology policies and procedures; and, applicable State procurement and Federal grants and contracts regulations. This role will also provide advice and guidance on legal matters, including transactions (grants and contracts), corporate law, tax law, litigation, research security, government contracts, ethics, and compliance matters; it will also coordinate with the Office of Ethics & Compliance, on organizational and personal conflict of interest (COI) issues, ethics inquiries, investigations, and promoting a strong ethical culture. The individual in this role will have proven experience in transactions, compliance matters, proactive solution-oriented approaches to reduce risk, and a proven track record of service delivery experience to internal and external stakeholders. The Associate General Counsel (Research), will work closely with leaders in the Institutes research enterprise, campus leaders, Office of the General Counsel peers and team members, and business partners to provide legal guidance and support, and to ensure information is shared and transactions are completed effectively. In addition to legal expertise, this position requires effective communication skills, the ability to build and sustain relationships, negotiation, problem-solving, process-improvement skills, and diplomacy. Job Summary
Lead and manage a team of attorneys, paralegals, and other legal professionals in an identified practice group. Serve as the primary subject matter expert and senior leader of their practice group who sets organizational strategies to support the mission of the Institution and the Office of the General Counsel. Proactively representing the Office of the General Counsel in the campus and surrounding community as a solutions provider. Provide input to the Deputy General Counsel on key priorities, resource allocation, and strategic goals. Provide advice, counsel and training regarding legal requirements, best practices, and strategies for managing risk. Provide leadership and serve as a key advisor in protecting the legal interest of the Institute and ensuring its operations are within the scope of established law and policy. Job Duty 1 - Proactively identify legal issues and provide counsel to senior administration in multiple specialized areas in the law relating to higher education. Serve as the primary subject-matter expert of their practice group and proactively communicate with and educate Institute client groups and teams on changes in legal compliance, policies and practices.
