The Opportunity

As the Global Head of Business Strategy & Operations, you will shape and drive the overall strategy for operational excellence within PD Data Sciences and Analytics (PD-DSA). You will report to the Global Head, PD Data Sciences & Analytics, and you will be responsible for developing and implementing the broader PD-DSA strategy in alignment with company objectives, while ensuring the full organization's overall performance. This role will focus on ensuring that business objectives are met through the design and execution of strategic initiatives to support PD-DSA and PD outcomes while also driving operational excellence in the enterprise areas of data privacy and sharing, quality and compliance, internal and external resourcing. You will be expected to partner with PD leaders to drive decision-making, while creating and communicating value across the organization. You will play a critical role in defining and embedding business excellence capabilities within PD-DSA, fostering a culture of collaboration, agility, and efficiency.

You will lead a global, high-performing organization of approximately 25-35 professionals. Your direct reports will be a team of directors and individual contributors. Sitting on the PD-DSA leadership team, you will collaborate with senior leaders in PD-DSA and beyond to influence and contribute to the overall strategy and success of PD-DSA.

PD-DSA SHARED LEADERSHIP OBJECTIVES

  • Develop and set a clear PD-DSA strategy and goals that align with Roche's broader objectives, ensuring that you integrate Roche's One Pharma strategy, PD goals, and R&D Excellence methods into the strategic direction

  • Embed and drive the adoption of PD-DSA's strategic imperatives of Data, Digital/AI, and Design (the 3Ds) across your teams' workflows, taking ownership of this mindset shift to ensure a seamless integration of these principles into daily operations

  • Act as a role model for your teams by delivering excellence in all aspects of your work (what you do, how you do it, and the impact you have), fostering a culture of learning, growth, and continuous improvement that empowers team members to reach their potential

  • Define and create clear accountability across each function in your organization and beyond, ensuring that you work in lock-step with your colleagues and partners to maintain alignment and drive cross-functional collaboration

Leadership &Strategy

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight across a team of 3-4 leaders and their sub-teams (including: data privacy and sharing, quality and compliance, strategic sourcing, communications), ensuring a consistent and high-quality approach to PD-DSA business excellence across all therapeutic areas

  • Facilitate the development and implementation of a comprehensive PD-DSA strategy that aligns with Roche's research and development objectives

  • Own strategic planning efforts, identifying opportunities for operational improvements and business transformation

  • Drive a culture of collaboration, agility, and continuous improvement within PD-DSA. Act as a role model for business excellence, inspiring teams to embrace strategic thinking and operational rigor

  • Champion change management initiatives, ensuring successful adoption of new processes and ways of working

  • Stay abreast of the latest trends and advancements in data science, analytics, and life sciences research

  • Evaluate challenges as they arise and develop innovative solutions for teams to execute

Stakeholder Engagement and Partnerships

  • Act as the primary strategic partner alongside functional leadership teams to senior leadership across PD-DSA, providing insights and recommendations to inform business decisions, including: operational considerations for the implementation new methodologies, sourcing, data privacy and sharing, quality and compliance, and PD-DSA ways of working

  • Ensure seamless collaboration across PD-DSA and with key external stakeholders, ensuring effective collaboration and alignment on key priorities and overall PD-DSA strategic initiatives

  • Represent Roche in industry forums, in front of external partners, and with thought leaders to enhance PD-DSA's strategic positioning and operational capabilities

Investment, Business Integration & Operational Optimization

  • Identify, evaluate and direct investment opportunities that enhance efficiency and drive sustainable growth. Partner closely with Digital Endpoint & Patient Centered Solutions and Real World and Clinical Data Strategy teams to ensure these investments (e.g., platforms, back-bone infrastructure, program management capabilities, etc.) are strategically aligned with PD-DSA priorities in service of Roche's goals

  • Balance the cost, risks, and benefits of investment decisions with an enterprise-wide perspective

  • Lead efforts to integrate new capabilities and technologies that optimize operations and improve decision-making

  • Establish and define collaboration standards across PD-DSA and PD partners, ensuring alignment and consistency

  • Define and drive cross-PD-DSA initiatives and collaboration that enhance the organization's impact, efficiency, and effectiveness. Oversee governance and performance tracking of key initiatives, ensuring measurable impact and accountability

  • Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress and drive continuous improvement

  • Provide thought leadership on emerging trends, benchmarking against industry best practices, and ensuring PD-DSA remains at the forefront of innovation and business excellence

Team Development

  • Lead, inspire, and develop a high-performing global team of PD-DSA strategy and operational leaders, ensuring their continued professional growth and ability to drive strategic impact

  • Establish a strong culture of accountability, agility, and continuous learning within the Business Strategy & Operations function

  • Define clear performance metrics and success criteria for theBusiness Strategy & Operations function, ensuring alignment with organizational goals

  • Partner with P&C and leadership to attract, retain, and develop top strategy and operational talent to support long-term organizational success

  • Tack performance metrics for the team's overall success, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and driving continuous improvement, while providing professional development opportunities for team members

Who You Are

  • Masters in Finance, Business, Strategy, or related field

  • 10+ years of professional experience, with at least a few years in strategy, operations, consulting, or executive support roles

  • Proven experience in a leadership role in an organization with strong financial acumen and budget management, resourcing support, and executive leadership

  • Demonstrated success in a senior leadership role

  • In-depth knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP), international and in-country regulations, guidelines and their application, and all other applicable compliance standards related to data and statistical sciences and industry conventions

  • Thorough understanding of the overall drug development process

  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with a track record of successfully leading complex projects and change initiatives

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels

  • Experience in defining and embedding business excellence capabilities within an organization, fostering a culture of innovation, agility, and efficiency

  • Track record of establishing successful internal and external partnerships with relevant partner organizations and able to act as an ambassador for Roche

  • Proven experience in leading and managing high-performing teams and managing multiple levels of leaders

  • Strong English language skills

  • International travel as required - estimated at 20%

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco $250,800.00 - $465,800.00 USD Annual. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
