This position, under direct supervision from a pharmacist, performs professional inventory management, such as procurement and delivery of medications from central pharmacy to satellite locations throughout Fairfax County. Manage automated dispensing machines or other hardware and software specific to inventory supply and resupply. Evaluates inventory management practices, monitor medication usage patterns, develop cost-saving strategies, conduct comprehensive analyses of the pharmacy's operational processes, identify inefficiencies, and recommend strategic improvements to optimize performance. This position includes information technology management related to pharmacy operations, department-specific administrative programs, or related functions and performs related work as required. Analytical and technical work to assist with research and policy development related to the operations and services of a fire and EMS pharmacy unit; assists with the monitoring and reporting on the business processes and activities, including measuring and analyzing indicators of performance, quality, quantity, and efficiency as it relates to pharmaceutical practices to support decision-making, ensure regulatory compliance, and enhance service delivery. This vital role ensures the safe and effective distribution of medications to support our first responders in their life-saving work.
The assigned functional areas are professional pharmacy, compounding, pharmacy technician, pharmaceutical formulary systems and inventory control systems.

- Conducts professional-level work in functions or activities, such as financial, budgetary, procurement, contract administration, human resources, training, information technology, and similar functions;
- Assists with a variety of technical and professional work related to monitoring and reporting on departmental business processes, activities, and outcomes;
- Performs designated segments of projects or programs with well-defined objectives, including activities such as data collection, synthesis of data gathered to support analysis, and documentation of findings and recommendations;
- Performs data collection activities in support of existing studies, projects or programs, including conducting research; participating in interviews; administering customer, organizational or employee surveys; assisting in the facilitation of focus groups; participating in work group collaboration; and mapping or charting of workflow processes;
- Assists with measuring and analyzing indicators of performance, quality, quantity and efficiency of services;
Compiles and provides business information to management; - Maintains index or log of standard forms for gathering information from a variety of audiences;
- Formats data sets and performs qualitative and descriptive statistical analysis to aggregate and assimilate data for displaying potential patterns and trends;
- Assists in implementing business improvements, such as changes to policies, work practices, processes and procedures;
- Contributes to position papers, evaluation reports and presentations.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for " Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in the field related to the assigned functional area.
BRIDGE CLASS EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Four years of increasingly complex technical experience in the assigned functional area, comparable to experience at the Admin Assistant IV, or higher, level. This class can serve as a bridge class enabling individuals who do not meet the educational or professional experience standards listed above to qualify for this class by possessing four years of increasingly complex technical experience in the assigned functional area, comparable to experience at the Admin Assistant IV, or higher, level. The purpose of this bridge class is to promote upward mobility within the Fairfax County workforce. However, persons qualifying for this class on the basis of their technical experience may not substitute this technical experience for education, or for professional experience, in order to qualify for other employment opportunities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Prior experience working in emergency medicine or directly with EMS agencies.
- Prior experience working as a pharmacy technician in a dynamic and fast-paced setting.
- Experience managing controlled substances, including regulatory compliance, inventory management, and ensuring proper use within an EMS context.
- Familiarity with the medications and protocols used in pre-hospital emergency care.
- Strong clinical knowledge, especially in pharmacotherapy relevant to emergency and critical care settings.
- Understanding federal, state, and local regulations governing pharmaceutical storage, distribution, and use in emergency settings.
- Ability to communicate clearly with EMS personnel, medical directors, and other stakeholders.
- Experience working in interdisciplinary teams, particularly in high-stress environments such as emergency medicine or public safety.
- Knowledge of pharmacy information systems, particularly those used in EMS settings.
- Understanding the logistical aspects of managing pharmaceutical supplies in a fire and EMS department, including inventory control and supply chain management.
- Ability to quickly assess and resolve complex clinical and operational issues.
- High level of accuracy in managing medication inventories and ensuring compliance with regulations.
- Ability to work effectively in dynamic and sometimes unpredictable environments.
- Strong commitment to ethical practices and public safety.
- Familiarity with the mission and operational needs of the fire and EMS department.
- PTBC certification preferred
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
- Driver's License (Required)
- Licensed as a Pharmacy Technician by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
The appointee to the position will be required to complete a criminal background check, credit check, driving record check, and tuberculosis test to the satisfaction of the employer.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Maintain a sufficient fitness level to participate in packaging, distributing, and delivering pharmaceutical medications and supplies. Good eyesight is necessary; proper protective clothing is necessary. Ability to carry large/bulky equipment. Must be able to drive a county vehicle. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
