POSITION CONCEPT

This ADI Project Engineer will be responsible for strategic planning and implementation of field device initiatives within the Advanced Distribution Infrastructure (ADI) program. This role focuses on developing and guiding the strategy for deploying, managing, and optimizing field devices such as sensors, reclosers, SCADA-controlled switches, and other advanced distribution assets. Additionally, the Field Device Strategy Lead will collaborate with the Telecom team on the rollout of Private LTE (PLTE) to ensure that SCADA devices and other critical field assets are integrated with the communication infrastructure. The role will also work closely with procurement teams to oversee the sourcing of field devices and ensure alignment with ongoing substation projects, facilitating the seamless integration of field devices into the broader infrastructure.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Lead the development and execution of the overall strategy for field device integration within the ADI program, ensuring alignment with organizational goals for grid modernization and advanced distribution capabilities. Collaborate with internal teams to define requirements for field devices and ensure integration with systems such as GIS, ADMS, and SCADA. (30%)

2. Manage the project plan, including stated deliverables in terms of quality, scope, timelines and budgets/costs in line with project objectives. (20%)

3. Work closely with procurement teams to guide the sourcing and acquisition of field devices. Ensure that device procurement aligns with the strategic goals of the ADI program and meets the technical requirements for integration with substation and distribution networks. (20%)

4. Define schedule and coordination of deploying distribution field devices in conjunction with the ADI Integrated Project Plan, including the implementation of PLTE, upgrades to substations, and infrastructure enhancements to accommodate DER. (20%)

5. Develop and implement policies, procedures, and standards for managing field devices within the ADI program. Ensure that these initiatives meet the organization's requirements for operational readiness and align with best practices in grid modernization and distribution automation. (20%)

SUPERVISION

May have direct responsibility for one or more professional or paraprofessional employees on a project assignment basis

RELATIONSHIPS

Key Internal: Regular interaction with senior leadership, technical teams, and personnel across multiple departments, including Telecom, Grid Operations, Substation and Meter Services, Distribution Control Center, IT teams, Procurement, and ADI program teams.

Key External: Regular interaction with external vendors, technology providers, and industry partners.

QUALIFICATIONS (Applies to All levels)

Education

Required:
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (Electrical, Civil, Industrial, Mechanical or Chemical) from an ABET accredited college program is required

Preferred: An Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering degree; Florida licensed Professional Engineer

Related Experience

Required:
Minimum of 4 years of experience as an Engineer performing work related to the Duties & Responsibilities of this position.

Preferred: Experience in Telecommunications or Substation Engineering is preferred

Licenses/Certifications

Required: None

Preferred: Florida licensed Professional Engineer

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA)

Required:
Familiarity with scope development, procurement and contracts, project controls, scheduling, construction drawings and specifications, and construction estimating.

Must be able to work independently on complex assignments involving a wide variety of situations requiring sound judgment.

Requires familiarity with TEC computer-based tools MSOffice, PDF editing tools (Adobe Acrobat), to efficiently complete day-to-day assignments.

Must be able to communicate effectively both through oral communication and formal written correspondence.

Preferred: Familiarity with and understanding of the Tampa Electric distribution construction specifications, operations and mapping to produce designs and create estimates that encompass the expansion, relocation and maintenance of facilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Primarily office-based, with occasional travel to company sites, vendor locations, and field/substation sites for strategic planning and oversight. May require occasional outdoor work in various weather conditions to assess field device deployment and network installations.

LEVEL SCOPE AND ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

A combined maximum of one year of work experience credit may be granted for co-op work experience, an advanced degree, and/or a PE license.

Engineer II

Qualifications for this level shall include sustained demonstrated sound knowledge in a functional work area with an expected or higher degree of performance. Should have demonstrated knowledge of policies and work procedures within the Company. Independently evaluates, selects and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria using judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications; may have significant role in training, orientation, assigning work or supervising other employees; may receive assistance and/or guidance on unusual problems; may have limited authority for performing work on an individual basis with quasi-supervisory responsibility over other employees as may be assigned; may prepare engineering analyses, specifications and reports on an independent basis.

Required: Minimum of 4 years of experience as an Engineer performing work related to the Duties & Responsibilities of this position.

Senior Engineer

Must have demonstrated above expected performance in the Engineer II classification, sound knowledge of functional area of work and advanced engineering concepts and their interactions and relationships to total Company operation, and eligibility to become a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Florida. Approval by the business unit Vice President is required.

Required: Minimum of 8 years of experience as an Engineer performing work related to the Duties & Responsibilities of this position and eligibility to become a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Florida.

Principal Engineer

The Principal Engineer will be expected to continue technical development and growth and may supervise a staff of engineers or technicians. Supervision received is essentially administrative, with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits. Recognized as a company-wide expert in the respective field of study. Approval by the business unit Vice President and the Vice President - Human Resources is required.

Licenses/Certifications

Preferred: Professional Engineer license in the State of Florida

Experience

Required:
Minimum of 12 years of experience as an Engineer performing work related to the Duties & Responsibilities of this position.

Preferred: Eight years of construction project engineering experience

Additional Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Required: Must have demonstrated above expected performance as a Senior Engineer, with demonstrated technical leadership proficiency in transmission line design, construction and operation, including areas such as foundation design and remediation, Electric and Magnetic Field (EMF) or transmission line rating methodologies. Membership and participation in technical or professional organizations is expected.
