JOB TITLE: ADVISORY ENGINEER (STRUCTURAL MECHANICS SME) DUTIES (GENERAL) Initiate own technical programs and make recommendations to management on technical programs based on analysis of customer needs and technology trends, reach solutions to the most complex technical problems in field(s) of expertise and to influence solutions in neighboring disciplines. Apply technical experience in field of specialization or broad-based experience in multiple technical fields and use other technical resources in the company and external resources, to resolve complex problems. Incorporate advanced technical practices and a variety of complex features such as complicated technical requirements, application of new or special materials or processes and difficult coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and program planning. Provide leadership in determining solutions to complex problems and is recognized as having expertise in a functional area of technical specialization. Recommend research programs for others in group and assist in that planning. Develop solutions to the most complex technical problems in areas of expertise and in adjacent technical fields, influence technical direction of other parts of the department, acts as a technical communicator across disciplines to optimize the creative solution of technical problems. Conceive needed programs for self and for others in the department. Put needs in perspective with regard to other technical needs at SRNS. Sponsor new ideas in the department Prepare plans including schedules, budgets, and personnel requirements for solving major technical tasks for division. Develop schedules, monitor progress, monitor expenditures of budget and review quality of work performed. Include research, development, testing, quality assurance requirements. Communicate results verbally and in manuscripts form. Regularly report the results and represent SRNS and SRS in technical areas to oversight groups and professional societies. Mentor less senior professionals in communication skills. Maintain excellent technical credibility by contributing significantly toward meeting Site missions and goals which may be demonstrated by issuing reports, making presentations, and /or involvement in national technical organizations. Mentor less senior professionals as a means of transferring technical knowledge and insight. Recommend engineering and technology research, development and application programs for others and assist in the planning of such programs. Demonstrate commitment to TQ concepts by active leadership leading to successful implementation of Division and Department TQ Initiatives. Be a resource for TQ initiatives in Department and Division. Work Hours: Up to a 40-hour work week is scheduled. SRNS utilizes various work schedules including 5/8s (8 hour/day; five days per week), 4/10's (10 hours/day; four days per week), and 9/80's (9 hours/day, five days on week AA and four days on week BB. Work week excludes SRNS holidays. Each workday has 30-minute lunch. Overtime will be expected at times to meet deliverables and will be utilized at the discretion of the Manager. DUTIES (SPECIFIC FOR THE POSTING) Provide Structural Mechanics subject matter expertise to Design Engineering staff. Primary responsibilities include equipment qualification (seismic analysis and testing), advanced FEA stress-strain analysis, impact analysis, dynamic loads, design of structures, systems and components, extreme load engineering (seismic, explosion analysis, impact, jet and fragment interaction and whip effects), risk-informed inspection programs, failure analysis, field support and trouble-shooting, and mechanical integrity. Engineering services shall be provided using SRNS processes and procedures. Programmatic guidance will be provided by SRNS. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE Education: Typically, an advance degree and experience - PhD degree and about 15 years experience, MS degree and 17 years experience, BS degree and about 21 years experience. Position specific: BS Degree in one of the following disciplines: Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or current registration as a Professional Engineer in one of the above disciplines. Experience/Skills: Position specific: Significant experience in pressure equipment (piping and pipeline systems, vessels, and tanks), design and analysis. Qualification and inspection fitness-for-service and integrity management. Failure analysis and repairs of systems and components in the nuclear power and the process industries, and in the DOE complex. OTHER REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Area Security Access: Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" security clearance. An active DOE clearance is not initially required to perform assigned duties. After award, the selected candidate will be notified when to apply for a clearance based on specific work assignments. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Candidates who have possessed an active DOE clearance (L or Q) within the past two (2) years are preferred. Previous SRS Design Engineering or DOE facility experience is preferred. |
