JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The Burghardt Lab in the College of Agricultural Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University seeks a part-time research assistant to perform routine lab and field activities and specialized processing of leguminous plants and rhizobial bacteria. Our lab uses interdisciplinary techniques to study plant-microbe interactions, particularly in root nodules and the rhizosphere.Our research focuses on how host genetic changes and the soil environment influence legume-rhizobia interactions. We are currently conducting NSF-funded and USDA-funded research utilizing a variety of legume species along with a custom collection of rhizobial bacteria. Preference will be given to candidates with a bachelor's degree in Plant Science (or a related field) and experience and mastery of all of the following skills: 1) DNA extractions and PCR amplification, 2) data entry and management, 3) project management software (e.g., ASANA and SLACK), 4) sterile technique, 5) plant growth and microbial culture, 6) R statistical environment, 7) sampling legume nodules in the field and 8) experience phenotyping and photographing legumes and rhizobia for image analysis.
