Position Description

This paraprofessional position holds responsibilities that may involve supervision of a work unit and/or the undertaking of specialized work requiring a high level of expertise, such as cataloging or processing of manuscript collections. Independent judgment and a comprehensive knowledge of tasks are used to accomplish the mission of the unit. Work is performed under general supervision within established policies with latitude for independent judgment. Evaluation is based upon a review of completed work and overall results obtained.

About the Department and/or College

Texas Tech University Libraries serve as a vital partner with students and faculty in their learning endeavors. The University Libraries' system comprises: (1) University Library, (2) Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library,(3) Architecture Library, and (4) Peters Family Legacy Library within the Student Enrichment Center. The University Library is a patent and trademark depository and is one of two regional depositories for U.S. government documents in Texas. The central focus of the Texas Tech University Libraries is to make available 3.72 million physical volumes, electronic resources, special collections and archives, and to offer services to students and faculty that enable academic and research success.

Major/Essential Functions


  • Works in service areas providing exceptional customer service. Answers incoming phone calls and triages where appropriate. Maintains inventory of reserve items. Collects and enters statistical information of transactions outside of ALMA.
  • Assists patrons with reservation of Group Study Rooms. Issues TexShare cards, community eRaider accounts, community borrower's cards, and guest WiFi to customers.
  • Serves as escalation point to Access Services Leadership Team for customer service questions. Refers customers to relevant Libraries faculty and staff.
  • Serves as an escalation point for safety and security concerns including processing Lost & Found, performing security rounds, and opening/closing the building as needed. Notifies and follow-up with supervisor about safety and security concerns.
  • Submits End of Shift, End of Day, and Incident Reports as needed; Submits Access Services Work Orders.
  • Provides supplemental training for Student Assistants after initial training by SA Supervisor; Monitors student assistants' day-to-day activities including monitoring student assistant schedule and notifies SA Supervisor of issues or successes.
  • Completes assigned projects within stacks management at the main library and remote storage facilities.
  • Participates in writing and updating Access Services procedures and documentation.

Required Qualifications

Bachelors' degree in related field and one year related experience; knowledge and competencies of Microsoft Office. Relevant specialized work experience may substitute for education on a year for year basis. Additional job related education may substitute for required experience on a year for year basis. Ability to learn and work with computer applications unique to libraries or archives.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Previous library experience.
  • Knowledge of Integrated Library Systems.
  • Ability to effectively manage time.
