Position Highlights |
The Physical Access Consultant works to ensure campus accessibility in the physical or built environment and consults with campus colleagues around accessible campus events. The Consultant is committed to the ongoing assessment of campus space and conducts proactive assessments and plan reviews. The Physical Access Consultant may also work with Access Consultants or with individuals to determine the best course of action in responding to a barrier in the physical environment.

Duties & Responsibilities |
Duties and Responsibilities Event and Classroom Access:
- Collaborates and consults on the planning and implementation of major campus events such as Commencement, Convocations, ASUA student events, athletic events, Orientation, Homecoming, Family Weekend, Greek Life activities, Festival of Books, etc. to provide guidance regarding physical accessibility of the event.
- Offers consultation and training to event planners for a variety of campus events ensuring accessibility is prioritized.
- Works
collaboratively with departmental experts to ensure communication access is established for major campus events (ASL Interpreting /CART Captioning). - Evaluates classrooms and event spaces for accessibility, including maps, signage, online information, nearby parking, paths of travel, and adjacent bathrooms.
- Collaborates with campus units to address identified barriers to access.
- Responds to reports of physical access barriers on campus and works quickly to ensure access.
Reviews plans for new construction and major renovation projects for accessibility and potential for universal design.
- Collaborates with University Facilities Services and campus partners to integrate Universal Design principles into new construction and renovation projects, ensuring compliance with ADAAG and University Design Specification Standards.
- Assesses architectural and site plans for accessibility throughout all phases of design and contributes to design review meetings as part of the campus review team.
- Participates in regular design and planning meetings and conducts site visits at key project stages.
- Works strategically to incorporate and increase awareness about universal access and inclusive design across campus physical environments. To accomplish this ongoing goal, active participation in university committees is necessary.
Consultation and Training:
- Creates and maintains guidelines, processes, checklists, how-to documents, and training materials to support an accessible physical environment.
- Advises Disability Resource Center (DRC) staff on implementing specific accommodations for both learning and workplace settings, while also working to improve access system-wide.
- Provides training (formal and informal presentations) throughout the community on principles of Universal Design and other disability-related topics to promote awareness, sensitivity, and competence in ensuring access for individuals with disabilities.
Professional Activities:
- Monitors legislation and trends at national, state, and local levels affecting disability access.
- Conducts research on accessibility and best practices in higher education.
- Builds partnerships to support Disability Resources' mission and enhance campus accessibility.
- Shares university practices with other institutions and tracks higher education trends.
- Engages in professional development through presentations, publications, conferences, and related activities.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
- Knowledge of disability law, inclusive educational design, and disability frameworks and their application in higher education.
- Skill at developing and delivering professional presentations and workshops.
- Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Expertise in technical standards, specifically with the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAGS), University Design Specification Standards, and Universal Design principles.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree
or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required. - Minimum 3 years
relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience with event planning and building plan reviews.
- Two years' professional experience in higher education or disability services.
