Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $58,600/year to $70,000/year. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $58,600/year to $100,800/year.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

The Promoting Opportunity and Equity in Learning (PROPEL) Program supports 60-100 extreme low income, first generation, and underrepresented students on the UCSB campus who are majoring in the Social Sciences. The primary objective of the program is to attract high achieving underrepresented students to the campus and to support students in the Social Sciences to increase the four-year graduation rates of this population. These goals are pursued by: providing undergraduate low-income students with a full four years scholarship; providing PROPEL Scholars the academic support and additional training needed to succeed academically; providing training for students to succeed in graduate school/workforce; helping students maintain social and mental health. The PROPEL Program works in conjunction with the Promise Scholars program to reach goals and maintain a high standard of academic success. The PROPEL Director provides wrap-around services to high-need students for the duration of the students' time to degree at UCSB and assists students with graduate or professional world preparation. Additionally, the PROPEL Director works to serve all students who need assistance, regardless of whether they are in the program or not. The PROPEL Director utilizes systems such as Gaucho Blue, AAA, and Zones in order to assist students.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 1-3 years work experience in an academic environment.
  • Solid knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Strong computer skills including but not limited to: Google Suite, Zoom, with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, including excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Ability to exercise good decision-making skills
  • Possess a strong problem-solving orientation.
  • Ability to work well independently as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, completing multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
  • Good organizational and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 4-6 years in relevant experience/training.
  • Solid knowledge of UCSB systems including STAR system, BLUE, GOLD, Kronos, and other UCSB advising and scheduling systems as required.
  • Knowledge of University processes and procedures related to the position.
  • Knowledge of departmental / school / college courses and majors.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 50% Advising - Manages all advising of PROPEL scholars and oversees and trains peer advisors. Responsible for the provision of accurate information for all students seeking advice on department programs and courses, providing individual and group counseling to students, including undeclared, double majors, minors and students in any discipline. Must be knowledgeable of the policies, procedures and requirements for many majors and minors within the College of Letters and Science, and frequently the Colleges of Engineering and Creative Studies. Advises current students about department, college, and university requirements, policies and procedures. The Program Director may counsel transfer students, counsels new freshmen during summer orientation, and others throughout the year. Maintains close contact with advisors and counselors from UCSB and other institutions, apprising them of Program changes and acts as a source of information about the PROPEL Program and its activities. Aids in development of students decision-making skills and reinforces student self-direction. Is the principal contact for campus academic departments and students, community and four-year college personnel and the public for all Program questions and issues. Responsible for data collections and analysis of program metrics.
  • 10% Admissions and Administration - Responsible for first cut of all PROPEL student identification and selection for review and final selection by the Dean. Publications: Responsible for accuracy of all material which represents the Program including social media, website maintenance, scholarship awards and information and any student records as required. Oversees statistical reports connected with course enrollment needs, course offerings and academic resources available to all PROPEL students. Liaison Activities: The Director evaluates student needs and exercises professional judgment in referral to other offices such as the College of Letters and Science, Office of Admissions, Office of the Registrar, Financial Aid, EOP, Counseling and Career Services, the Ombudsman, and CLAS. Disabled Student Program: Support and accommodate students with permanent or temporary disabilities who provide appropriate documentation and meet the eligibility requirements as needed. Undergraduate Scholarships: Processes all student scholarship awards conforming to all university policy guidelines.
  • 15% Management of PROPEL - In tandem with the Promise Scholars Director, prepares peer recruitment, hires, supervises and trains career undergraduate peer advisors. Develops/updates and implements annual peer program and training throughout the year. Serves as expert resource to staff and faculty in the Social Sciences and helps solve non-routine and complex problems. Monitors and assures compliance of allocated budget. Tracks annual budget and provides quarterly reports to Dean. Recommends and implements cost-effective use of available resources and projects budgetary needs for PROPEL annually. Works with the Assistant Dean, Budget and Administration and Assistant Dean, Development to ensure all undergraduate student needs are being met, and to develop new programming ideas. Presents annual report to the Deans Cabinet each spring.
  • 25% Fundraising and Grant Writing - The PROPEL Scholars Program attracts donors who often want to financially support new and continuing students through gifts of all sizes. The Director will assist the Assistant Dean, Development to coordinate giving opportunities, assist with scholarship awarding and selection, stewardship efforts, student interviews, communications with donors and tracking scholarship recipients and duration of awards. This position will also interact with current and prospective donors both in person and in writing as needed.
