Cryogenics Manager

Shared Research Support Services, Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, invites applications for the Cryogenics Facility Manger position as part of the Western Pennsylvania Quantum Infrastructure Core. Applicants should have experience with cryogenic equipment including helium recovery plants and dilution refrigerators. The main duties of this position will be overseeing the operation and maintenance of the Pitt Cryogenics Plant and recovery network and the maintenance, repair, and upgrade of cryogenic equipment within various laboratories and facilities within the Dietrich School.

The incumbent is required to regularly run the cryogenics plant, maximize recovery from the system, and coordinate maintenance and reporting effort of the plant among the SRSS team. The position will work with the Director of Quantum Infrastructure, faculty, and the electronics and machine shops to design and optimize new and existing cryostats and components and provide or arrange for advanced component maintenance. The incumbent will collaborate with faculty on proposal submissions and assist in training graduate students and postdoctoral scholars on the proper use and maintenance of their cryogenics systems.


Job Summary

Designs, fabricates, and maintains research instrumentation and develops conceptual project design and instrumentation, software programs, and data collection methods.Assists with conducting research. Oversees research projects and writes and presents results reports at conferences.


Essential Functions

Manage, maintain, and operate Pitt Cryogenics Facility
Maintain, optimize, and upgrade cryostats and components
Ensure safe and efficient use of instrumentation and recovery network


Physical Effort

Must be able to bend, crawl, or climb ladders to access components for maintenance. Sufficient mobility is required to access remote laboratories and facilities. Most be able to move heavy cryogenic dewars between filling stations and pickup locations.
