Job Summary The Director of Platform Services provides visionary technology leadership for end-to-end platform services solutions. The Director will oversee platform design, ensuring that the IT systems meet the needs of a broad range of stakeholders. This role will collaborate with other central IT leads and department heads to ensure efficient and reliable delivery to campus and health stakeholders.
Key responsibilities include leading a team of engineers to execute IT roadmaps that align with UCSF's enterprise-wide goals, translating complex requirements into advanced technological solutions, and ensuring IT strategies are in sync with industry leading practices. Additionally, the role encompasses strategic participation in IT Service Continuity and Disaster Recovery planning, rigorous analysis of University needs for development and vendor selection, and the establishment of robust service-level agreements and performance monitoring frameworks.
As the senior technical authority for Platform Services, the Director enables 24/7 service availability and oversees a large, complex department. This role demands exceptional strategic planning, sophisticated risk assessment, and adept management of human, financial, and physical resources to drive organizational success. The Director, Platform Services will positively impact University of California, San Francisco's (UCSF) operations and culture by ensuring UCSF's Information Technology (IT) infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the University's mission. The Director, Platform Services will advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across customers and stakeholders. This role will execute UCSF's vision while modeling UCSF's culture and values. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The Platform Services team within Infrastructure Services is committed to empowering the academic, medical, and research mission of UCSF by ensuring that all customers have seamless, secure, and accessible technological support. The team oversees the management and maintenance of various technology platforms, including systems, enterprise databases, data center services, Epic infrastructure, and cloud infrastructure services, to guarantee they are secure, readily available, and performing optimally. Platform Services handles the management of critical software, such as Epic, ensuring it supports the highest level of medical service delivery by operating at peak performance. The team also oversees data center operations, including server management, storage, and backup services, to ensure the reliable delivery of health services and academic services. Additionally, it manages enterprise databases, Oracle, SQL, and other defined databases with a focus on data security, availability, and top-tier performance. All these tasks are critical not just for the smooth operation of the University's technological infrastructure, but also for enhancing productivity, enabling the provision of high-quality health services and learning, and ultimately, improving patient and student outcomes.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 9-12 years Experience in one or more of the following fields: information technology, network operations, computer science, systems administration, platform services.
- Minimum 6-10 years experience in managing a large team of technical professionals across multiple smaller units.
- Extensive applicable experience in platform services and computer information systems.
- Advanced skills associated with managing the internal information systems functions, data communications network and campus, medical center or Office of the President security systems.
- Expert in leading change management activities and managing their impact across multiple units or departments.
- Extensive experience in the management of ongoing technology infrastructure acquisition and expansion, to include the identification and integration of suitable emerging technologies
- Extensive knowledge of technical concepts and basic operating principles of data communications, computer hardware, vendor IT products, and software.
- Advanced ability to understand the process involved to adapt, integrate, and modify existing programs or vendor-supplied products for use within a large and complex technical environment
- Expert knowledge of information security issues, requirements, and trends especially in server, storage, database, and cloud technologies and the instrumentation of security policy within those technologies.
- Advanced project management skills with demonstrated experience delegating responsibility, tracking project progress, supervising others, and advising teams on competing priorities. Significant experience working in a project-based environment using leading project management practices including schedule management, status reporting, and communication of project risks and issues.
- Extensive experience solving technical and non-technical problems; able to delegate solutioning when appropriate to the proper resources. Able to lead data gathering efforts seeking information from multiple and diverse sources. Experience operating as a point of escalation. Demonstrated understanding of how decisions affect teams. Demonstrated ability to make decisions with integrity.
- Demonstrated experience providing inclusive leadership of others, cultivating an inclusive environment that values equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging.
- Inspires creativity in others and advises teams on industry-leading practices, such as the incorporation of new technologies or processes. Has demonstrated experience leading in an ever-changing, fast-paced environment.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills and is able to communicate work assignments to medium-sized teams. Demonstrated experience presenting complex technical information to audiences of technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of experience/training, in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, management information systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree, or equivalent combination of experience/training, in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, management information systems.
- Experience leading within a hospital provider environment.
