Job Overview:

The Ultrasound Technologist performs ultrasound examinations to assist in the diagnosis or treatment of disease and follows standards set forth by the ARDMS. The Ultrasound Technologist performs imaging and related procedures in the following areas; Abdomen, OB/Gyn and small parts.

The Ultrasound Technologist demonstrates knowledge of the human structure and functions, principles of sonic energy, applies appropriate patient care and recognizes patient conditions essential for successful completion of the procedure, and follows all established Ultrasound, Radiology and Hospital Policies and Procedures and is proficient exams both within and outside of the Department.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Successful completion of a comprehensive course in diagnostic medical ultrasound

Preferred:

  • 2 years of staff ultrasound work experience

Certifications and Licenses Required:

  • Certified by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
  • BLS through the American Heart Association

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Shift working, 8:00am 4:00pm, 3pm-11pm or 11pm-7am
  • Weekends and some holiday coverage possible
  • Per Diem

Essential Functions:

  • Obtains, reviews and integrates pertinent patient history and supporting clinical data to facilitate optimum diagnostic results
  • Practices aseptic techniques
  • Performs diagnostic procedures and records anatomical, pathological and/or physiological data for interpretation
  • Records and processes sonographic data and other pertinent observations made during the procedures for presentation and in the Radiology Information system
  • Provides patient education related to sonographic imaging and promotes principles of good health
  • Evaluates static and dynamic images and recordings of available data for technical quality, assuring proper identification is recorded
  • Assumes responsibility for provision of physical and psychological needs of the patient during procedures
  • Corroborates patient s clinical history with procedure, assuring information is documented and available for use by a licensed practitioner
  • Prepares patient for procedures by providing instructions to obtain desired results, gain cooperation and minimize anxiety Selects and operates ultrasonic equipment and associated devices to achieve desired results
  • Positions patient and equipment to best demonstrate the anatomic area of interest, respecting patient ability and comfort Immobilized patients as required for appropriate examination
  • Determines ultrasonic frequency and transducers for established protocols. Exercises precautions in patient applications, respecting the biological effects between ultrasound and tissue
  • Completes required documentation, respecting confidentiality and established protocol responsibility for assigned area and reports equipment malfunction
  • Provides practical instruction for students and/or other healthcare professionals Participates in the department s quality assessment and improvement plan. Maybe responsible for specific quality control duties in the assigned area
  • May be responsible for control of inventory car and control of specific ultrasound items
  • Provides radiation protection to patient, staff and self according to prescribed safety standards Recognizes emergency situations, initiates code procedures, administers first aid/CPR is needed
  • Coordinates patient scheduling with other area to ensure patient flow
  • Performs daily quality control test as assigned
  • Assists in the movement of patients to and from wheelchairs, carts and radiographic tables
  • Assists physicians with procedures as required
  • Assures appropriate indication for procedures are being utilized, if any question bring to radiologist or supervisor
