Patient Education Specialist - Oncology

This position is responsible for the oversight of oncology patient education content, programs and processes which will improve the overall patient educational experience. Collaborates with other healthcare professionals to ensure the patient education content is evidence-based and appropriate for patients at all educational levels.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Standardize the process for providing patient education for patients with cancer throughout the Smilow Cancer Hospital enterprise
  • 2. Assess current educational materials and methods used to deliver patient education in all Smilow locations; develop standards for use of all materials
  • 3. Perform focused needs assessment for all sites and disease teams/specialties
  • 4. Develops and implements patient educational and prevention programs, activities, and events
  • 5. Develops standardized process for reviewing/approving/implementing new patient education materials
  • 6. Develops strategic relationships to promote education/awareness and prevention activities
  • 7. Collaborates with nursing, providers, patients and other departments/specialties to enhance/develop patient education material to be used across all settings
  • 8. Demonstrates commitment to team, flexibility, professional interpersonal communication, critical thinking and patient centered care.
  • 9. Explore innovative methods for providing education to oncology patients in a variety of settings
  • 10. Evaluate third party education material to determine that which provides the most appropriate content (evaluate if cost effective)
  • 11. Lead an interdisciplinary patient education committee to provide forum for disease teams and staff to create, modify and implement education material; include Patient and Family advisory council.
  • 12. Participates in the oncology cluster as part of shared governance as it related to patient education content and workflow
  • 13. Collaborate with the patient/family advisory council (PFAC) regarding all aspects of patient education, including appropriate education materials, standardized format and schedule of providing educational content.
  • 14. Explore opportunities for research and outcomes as it relates to patient education
  • 15. Evaluate patient education programs for the effectiveness (staff, patients, community)
  • 16. Collaborate on the development of patient education content for the electronic medical record.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Masters Degree in Nursing required

EXPERIENCE

Minimum of five years experience in oncology nursing required. Relevant certification preferred.

LICENSURE

Candidates must possess a CT RN license

SPECIAL SKILLS

Candidates should possess a demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities as well as exceptional clinical knowledge and skill. She/he should have excellent written and verbal communication skills and the interpersonal ability to serve as a resource for nursing staff and patients being treated for cancer. Responsible for managing patient education programs for the Smilow patient population.


Additional Information
