Traveling Turbine/Generator Technicians are skillfully trained and Responsible for high valuable core work associated with Disassembly, inspection, repair, and Reassembly of various styles of Steam and combustion Turbines and Generators. They are Proficient in the Disassembly, Inspection, Repair and reassembly of turbine steam valves and boiler feed pumps turbines. the technicians Maintain proficiency in critical and high-risk lifts of Turbine rotors, Shells and maintain ability to perform all aspects of Turbine lifts such as inverting large components with weights exceeding 75 tons. They are Proficient in the setup and operation of Mobile machine shop equipment, and related components. in addition, technicians have the mechanical aptitude to work on station balance of plant related equipment. lastly, they demonstrate leadership capabilities to plan, schedule and implement scopes of work associated with plant maintenance and upgrades. Technicians maintain the ability to be qualified to work both in FHO and Nuclear. This job requires travel to temporary work locations throughout the Duke Energy fleet at approximately 75% of the year.

Responsibilities:

  • Traveling Turbine/Generator Technician is responsible for the Disassembly, inspection, repair, and Reassembly of various styles of Steam and Combustion Turbines and Generators. This includes the disassembly, inspection, repair and reassembly of turbine steam valves and boiler feed pump turbines. This includes all aspects of precision alignment.

  • Perform Maintenance and repair of Turbine and Generator subsystems such as: Hydrogen seal oil system, Steam seal regulator, Lube oil systems

  • Qualified to use precision instruments to an accuracy of 0.0001". Performs inspection on above mentioned turbines and generators and components using precision measuring equipment including: OD and ID micrometers, Vernier calipers, dial gauges.

  • Maintain proficiency in rigging of critical and high-risk lifts of Turbine rotors, Shells and maintain ability to perform all aspects of Turbine lifts such as inverting large components with weights exceeding 75 tons.

  • Operation of Bridge cranes up to 200 Ton capacity

  • Operation of various location vehicles and equipment. Including: forklifts, pickup trucks, man lifts, (scissor and boom lifts), steam cleaners, sandblasters, oxy/fuel cutting operations.

  • Perform machining operations associated with the repair and refurbishment of above-mentioned turbine and generators. This will include lathe operations, milling operations, boring operations, drilling operations, grinding operations.

  • Perform assigned maintenance activities independently or work within a team/group setting as needed.

  • Function as Lead Person/Implementation Manager in performing various maintenance activities.

  • Schedules may vary as project assignments and plant conditions dictate. Incumbent will be expected to work weekends, shift work and overtime. Travel away from home base can be up to 100% of the year. Expected to respond to unusual events and emergencies.

  • Read and interpret basic mechanical drawings, work orders and/or plans

  • Perform work on station balance of plant (BOP) related equipment

Basic/Required Job Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required. Technical school or applicable military training preferred.

  • 3 years related experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience related to disassembly, inspection, repair, and reassembly of large steam valves for Turbines.

  • Experience with all aspects of steam path alignment as it relates to large steam turbines.

  • Direct experience with coupling alignment of large steam and combustion turbine couplings.

  • Experience with all aspects of steam path alignment as it relates to large steam turbines.

  • 5 years relevant 'hands on' experience: in the assembly/disassembly and repair of various styles of large steam valves, both in shop environment, as well as field environments.

  • Direct experience in the field removal and installation of pumps, such as main turbine lube oil pumps, in a power generation, or similar environment.

  • Ability to read and interpret shop drawings, blue prints, work instructions, and procedures.

  • Ability and willingness to follow work instructions or procedures as required.

  • 5 years' hands on experience in the setup and operation of Mobile machine shop equipment, (lathes, mills, grinders, etc.).

  • 5 years relevant 'hands on' experience: in the assembly/disassembly and repair of various styles of Turbines/Generators both Large Steam and Combustion.

  • Direct experience related to disassembly, inspection, repair, and reassembly of large steam valves for Turbines.

  • 5 years 'hands on' experience in the disassembly/assembly of various styles Turbine and Generator related components, both in a both indoor and outdoor design.

  • Prior experience with operation of bridge cranes and rigging of turbine/generator components.

  • Prior experience with operation of various location vehicles and equipment. Including: forklifts, pickup trucks, man lifts, (scissor and boom lifts), steam cleaners, sandblasters, oxy/fuel cutting operations

  • Prior experience with turbine related components and their alignment, (Rotors shells. diaphragms, blade rings, packing boxes, oil seals, etc.)

  • Prior experience with disassembly inspection and repair of large steam valves.

  • Prior experience with the setup and operation of Machining equipment including: lathes, milling machines, surface grinders.

  • Prior experience with the setup and operation of both horizontal and vertical boring machines.

  • Prior experience with field machining operations, (boring bars, stud removal etc.)

  • Prior experience with both static and dynamic balancing of pump related components, (shafts, impellers, etc.)

Interfaces with all local leadership at the Carolinas Generation Stations, Technical directors and Supplemental labor associated with this turbine and generator outages.

Nature of the job

  • Tasks are straight-forward, routine and often repetitive.

  • Almost all tasks are very complex and involve responding to emergent events, industry changes, and new technologies etc...

  • Issues like developing a maintenance strategy to support a new technology or implementing cycling operations for a plant designed and built to be based loaded.
