The Journal-News is seeking an All Media Journalist to join our fast-paced newsroom in serving Butler County readers.

We're looking for a journalist who can write breaking news, enterprise and watchdog stories for print and digital; shoot video for our online products; and contribute to branded social media accounts - including Facebook and Twitter - that will be expected to build our audience.

You will work in a digital-first newsroom to provide digital videos and digital stories. This reporter will join our platform team of reporters and AMJs and will cover several local communities.

This role will need to be in the Dayton office at least once a month for meetings!

Responsibilities:

The ideal candidate is a reporter and writer with a passion for telling great stories, and someone who thrives in a fast-paced work environment.

  • Analyzes and collects information through various modes, including personal interviews, observation and news briefings.
  • Monitors local organizations and events and maintains relations with relevant citizens and persons of interest to develop ideas and compile appropriate reports.
  • Plans, edits and writes stories, ensuring adherence to established style guides, deadlines and legal and company standards.
  • Learns how to develop a broad range of sources and build strong relationships to help with story and background development.
  • Meets deadlines even with shifting priorities.
  • Have excellent reporting and writing skills, and the ability to write and edit quickly for digital
  • Use research to tailor stories to fit the audience for print and digital
  • Have a demonstrated social media presence that shows the ability to engage with readers
  • Be familiar and comfortable with standards for avoiding libel and slander, and have a good grasp of Ohio's public records laws
  • Ability to work in high-energy, fast-paced environment and be committed to learning throughout their careers.


Education/Experience

  • High School Diploma/GED and 5 years' experience in a related field. The right candidate could also have a different combination, such as any level degree/certification beyond a HS diploma/GED in a related discipline and 3 years' experience; or 7 years' experience in a related field
  • A portfolio of work that shows good work in reporting, writing and some of ability to shoot video and photos and use social media to get and transmit information
  • Genuine interest in story-telling of all kinds
  • Work is expected to be accurate and complete and according to set deadlines

USD 19.57 - 29.38 per hour

Compensation:

Hourly base pay rate is $19.57 - $29.38/hour. The hourly base rate may vary within the anticipated range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate's knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include commission (annual, monthly, etc.) and/or an incentive program.

Benefits:

Employees are eligible to receive a minimum of sixteen hours of paid time off every month and seven paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Employees are also eligible for additional paid time off in the form of bereavement leave, time off to vote, jury duty leave, volunteer time off, military leave, and parental leave.
