Job Summary

The Alliance Health Project (AHP) is a division of the UCSF Department of Psychiatry at Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG). We're hiring a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) interested in serving people living with complex trauma, minority stress, dual diagnoses, primary substance use disorders and severe mental illness. This is an opportunity that allows for hybrid work (remote and on site work) with the use of HIPAA compliant telehealth tools and resources provided by UCSF. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner selected will join a skilled and collegial mental health team at two of AHP's clinical sites.

Clinical time is split between thet AHP Services Center on 1930 Market St, San Francisco and at Positive Health Practice (Ward 86) at Zuckerberg San Francisco General. In the AHP Services Center role, the PMHNP will serve as a clinician working within a team consisting of mission-driven case managers, therapists, peer counselors and experts in sexual health and substance use disorders. The PMHNP will provide clinical assessment, psychopharmacological treatment and appropriate disposition for a caseload of patients with supervision provided by AHP's Medical Director along with guidance provided by clinical leaders within the organization.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $95.69 - $124.10 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Alliance Health Project (AHP) is a community-based LGBTQ+ and HIV-focused clinic located at 1930 Market Street in San Francisco. We provide psychotherapy, substance use counseling, case management, support groups, psychiatry, sexual health services, clinical traineeship, and provider education and training. Our multi-disciplinary staff are a client-centered, collaborative, Harm Reduction-oriented team. We have continued to grow as a community-based clinic by anticipating and addressing the changing needs of our LGBTQ+ and HIV community members for more than 40 years. Our process of continuous improvement of service to our community includes a strong focus on cultural humility and anti-racist service provision.

Required Qualifications


  • Minimum two years' experience as a psychiatric nurse practitioner
  • Minimum two years' experience with the chronically mentally ill, preferably with patients with a dual diagnosis (substance abuse/mental illness)
  • Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with others
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to work productively with effective time management
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately and be detail-oriented
  • Ability to efficiently prepare written summaries of activities, set priorities and complete reports within required timeframes
  • Ability to work with patients and program staff from diverse culture and social class backgrounds
  • Ability to work with patients through an equity and trauma informed lens
  • Ability to work as a team member in a culturally diverse setting
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and reliability

Preferred Qualifications


  • DNP
  • Prior related ZSFG experience
  • Prior UCSF or UC experience
  • Ability to provide treatment in English and Spanish

License/Certification


  • California driver's license (CDL) if required for position.
  • Current national certification from an accepted certifying agency and provide by first day of work.

  • Current and active RN and NP and Furnishing license in California.
  • Complete a BRN-recognized graduate master's degree program as a nurse practitioner.
  • Obtain an active and/or transferable DEA license to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer). For NPs who will be writing prescriptions.
  • Submit enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day. CCS enrollment as appropriate for pediatric environments.
  • Current AHA BLS.
  • State regulation requires that you have a supervising physician to practice.
  • Obtain Medical Staff privileges through the ZSFG Medical Staff Office.


UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
