Job Description
The Division of Advancement seeks an innovative and collaborative team member to serve as the Director of Gift Planning and Compliance for the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Development, the Director is responsible for planning, directing, and managing UMSL's gift planning program. This includes, but is not limited to, actively managing a portfolio of legacy and non-cash asset giving prospects and donors while working with and educating other development colleagues on various gift planning opportunities for any prospective donor to UMSL, as well as oversight of the compliance operation related to the Development Team The person in this position will possess strong communication and analytical skills, superb work ethic, proven problem-solving skills, and foster teamwork and collaboration. Responsibilities
- Leads the creation of high performing gift planning program, informing key strategies for gift planning including gift acceptance, gift documentation, prospecting, marketing, and stewardship.
- Meets metrics established with supervisor on an annual basis for metrics including but not limited to number of prospect or donor meetings, legacy gift solicitations, gift officer consultations, and dollars raised.
- Qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of 75 planned gift prospects.
- Works with alumni and friends to develop, document and secure various legacy gifts to benefit UMSL, including bequests, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, retirement accounts, real estate, gifts of securities, and other tax-advantaged gift methods.
- Oversees gifts-in-kind process for Advancement, including but not limited to coordinating with Gift Officers to complete documentation, securing approvals from necessary campus leadership, and submitting documentation to Advancement Services for recording.
- Serve as Office of Development liaison with University of Missouri System Offices of the Treasurer and Legal Counsel to develop legacy and non-cash asset gifts and process documentation within System guidelines.
- Serve as liaison to UM System Gift Planning Office on all processes involving System collaboration, including but not limited to estate realizations and life income gift agreements.
- Maintains expert knowledge on gift documentation practices. Submits gift forms and agreements within established timeframes and ensures consistent accuracy.
- Supervises the Senior Associate Director of Gift Compliance and Stewardship to ensure gift documentation, fund compliance, fund auditing, and stewardship activities are executed to support the activities of the Development Team.
- Maintains knowledge of laws and professional standards that govern the recording, receipting, and reporting of charitable planned gifts.
- Routinely collaborates with Gift Officers (approximately 10-12 individuals), including annual giving, leadership, and major gift officers, to plan for and solicit prospects capable of making a legacy or non-cash asset gift within their respective portfolios. Periodically provides internal training and education to Advancement staff on trends and best practices in gift planning.
- Establishes gift planning pipeline in collaboration with leadership annual giving and major gift officers utilizing prospect research and data analysis.
- Routinely collaborates with External and Donor Relations on 1963 Legacy Society donor recognition and stewardship efforts.
- With Advancement Communications, plan and executive high caliber planned gift materials, including newsletters, postcards, donor stories, and other print, web, and digital collateral.
- Coordinates with Advancement Services on the maintenance and accuracy of legacy and non-cash asset giving donor records within Advancement database, file records or other records systems.
- Represents the entire range of university fundraising priorities to legacy and non-cash asset gift prospects.
- Develops strategic fundraising plans and executes on major, high-profile gift and fundraising initiatives.
- Effectively and proactively communicates with donors, colleagues, and university leadership verbally, in writing, or through a variety of presentations.
- Implements policies and practices for the area, continually evaluating and improving the gift planning program by staying current on technical developments in industry practices.
- Develops and administers policies and practice or provides recommendations to policies, plans, programs that improve and enhance efficiencies and align with functional and organizational objectives.
- Develops and submits Annual Business Plan; sets functional priorities and allocates budgetary and staff resources to align with business objectives and annual plan(s).
- Report and track fundraising progress through the use of contact reports, prospect and moves management, and other communication and planning tools in the CRM.
Reviews data and pulls reports to utilize for decision making. - Travels locally and regionally for donor appointments.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Monday through Friday, 40 hours/week
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 6 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Must be able to travel locally and regionally and periodically work evenings or weekends. Must be able to maintain data management standards including data confidentiality, CRM entry requirements, and accessing reporting tools.
- Demonstrated success closing legacy and non-cash asset gift funding, including face-to-face solicitation of gifts.
- Ability to develop effective partnerships with internal and external constituencies.
- Ability to build and maintain positive constituent and colleague relationships through constructive communication skills and professionalism.
- Ability to work with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
- Effective communication skills including ability to write and speak persuasively about the institution.
- Strong interpersonal and motivational skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently while also working as a member of the University Advancement team.
- Preference for candidates who hold either a Certified Specialist in Planned Giving or Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy designation.
Anticipated Hiring Range
Pay commensurate with education and experience. Hiring Range: $80,000 - $105,000 Annual Grade: GGS-13 University Title: Advancement Director III
