Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The mission of the Division of Student Success is to work in partnership with the University community to deliver high quality services to facilitate the recruitment, retention and graduation of a diverse student population and strive to provide service, leadership, and transitional student support for UNCG. The Division of Student Success is committed to designing, implementing, and providing the services necessary to promote student success throughout the entire student life cycle from day one to diploma. This division includes the offices of University Advising, New Student Transitions & First Year Experience, Students First Office, Academic Achievement Center, TRiO Programs, UNCG Guarantee, GEAR UP UNCG, the Communication Lab, and the Math Help Center.
Position Summary
The Communication Lab is an integral component of the Division of Student Success. The Assistant Director will support the Director in enhancing students' communication skills across disciplines, focusing on one-on-one consultations and active learning strategies. This role involves overseeing the day-to-day operations of both the physical and online Communication Lab, assisting in staff training, and contributing to program development that aligns with the Center's commitment to fostering inclusive and engaging support in writing, speaking, and multimodal communication for a diverse student population.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Communication Studies, English, Education, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum three years of experience in communication centers support or academic support services.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in oral communication theory and practice.
  • Experience in training and supervising student workers in an academic support setting.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365 products especially teams for online writing consultations.
  • Experience in developing and delivering communication training programs.
  • Strong commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the academic community.


Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates
Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a leadership or supervisory role within a communications center (e.g., writing center or speaking center).
  • Experience in curriculum development and working with faculty to integrate writing, speaking, and/or multimodal support into coursework.
  • Record of engaging in research or assessment related to support center effectiveness and student outcomes.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with faculty across disciplines to integrate speaking support into curricular and co-curricular activities.
