Job Summary

Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for University Development, the Executive Director of Development Marketing, Communications and Outreach oversees and manages the University Development Marketing and Communications Unit, Proposal Services Unit, and Donor Relations Unit, with significant responsibility to achieve established, strategic goals. The Executive Director establishes objectives, directs programs, develops strategies and policies with DEVAR-wide impact, manages human, financial, and physical resources, and functions with a high degree of autonomy. This position proactively assesses risk to establish systems and procedures to protect organizational and brand assets. The Executive Director is responsible for highly impactful decisions that influence the overall success of the department, division, and Development and Alumni Relations as a whole.

This position requires expert judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions, and works independently, collaboratively, and collegially as part of a diverse, matrix organization.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience, knowledge and understanding of leading to excellence all aspects of marketing and communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and the most appropriate and effective applications.
  • Experience leading and directly participating in a successful development or marketing program; experience creating, developing and implementing long and short-term strategic plans.
  • Experience with management principles, including personnel and budget administration and skill to motivate, guide and direct subordinate staff. Experience recruiting, training, evaluating, motivating, and coaching employees of various backgrounds and identities. Documented experience building a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion amongst team members.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of technical applications including design concepts, various media and mediums, applications, etc. to effectively manage / supervise professional and technical staff.
  • Excellent skills to advise and consult management on all aspects of communications, ranging from developing effective communication strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information.
  • Excellent knowledge and skills in financial and personnel administration and management, including the skills to select, train, manage, motivate and evaluate professional and technical staff to produce high quality work; skill to take corrective action as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8+ years of progressive fundraising/development marketing and communications experience, and/or expert knowledge of the university fundraising profession and of contemporary issues and methods of higher education, institutional advancement and fundraising.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, project management and problem recognition and resolution skills.
  • Awareness, knowledge, and skill in applying diversity, equity and inclusion to one's work. A profound belief in the value of a diverse and safe workforce and a commitment to achieve this goal through collaboration and team building, working cooperatively with a diverse group of department and campus constituencies.
  • Expert written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.

Department Overview

The University Development Office provides leadership, support, and coordination and services to help build philanthropic support for UC Davis' research, teaching, and service mission and its related fundraising priorities. Senior managers work in close collaboration within Development & Alumni Relations and with the colleges, schools and units, providing value-added services.
